The Bull Moose Party, officially known as the Progressive Party, was formed in 1912 by former President Theodore Roosevelt after a split in the Republican Party. Roosevelt, disillusioned by the policies of his successor, William Howard Taft, decided to run for president again. However, after failing to secure the Republican nomination, he broke away and formed his own party. The name "Bull Moose" came from Roosevelt's declaration that he felt "as strong as a bull moose" after an assassination attempt during the campaign.
